How do I get to the Boathouse
|
Most water training (as well as racing) takes place on the Isis, the section of the River Thames that runs through Oxford. We access the Isis through our boathouse! The Anne’s boathouse is shared with Wadham and St. Hughs (affectionately named ‘WASH’), and is conveniently located right at the front of boathouse island in Christ Church meadows. To get there from Anne’s, most people walk or bike.
If walking, navigate to the Christ Church Meadows gate (across from Independent Cafe), turn in, then turn right onto Poplar Walk and keep going straight until you see a little bridge that takes you right to WASH. A leisurely stroll takes 35 min, but most people can make it under 30 min at a brisk walk. If you are keen on biking, cycle to Head of the River Pub, then lock up your bike at Folly Bridge or right outside the meadow gate, if space is available. Then walk the rest of the way to the boathouse. Biking from Anne’s to Head of the River takes around 5-7 min, and the rest of the walk takes another 5-6 min, so best to allot around just over 15 minutes in total, factoring in the time it takes to find parking and lock up your bike! In general, locating the boathouse for the first time can be a little confusing, so it’s best to give yourself an extra 10 or so minutes to get your bearings. For either option, keep in mind that Christ Church Meadow closes at around sunset and locks its gates, which is typically earlier than the end of afternoon water sessions. If that is the case, and you’ve biked, you will need to climb over the gate (very carefully!) to get to your bike. If you’ve walked, take the delivery gate out of Christ Church, as it remains unlocked – it is located just to the right of the main entrance. |
