What is Godstow?

Most of our crews train on our beloved home stretch of water called “The Isis”, but this can become very crowded. Therefore, some of our crews travel north to the Godstow stretch to train. This provides a slightly longer, wider stretch of water for us to use and allows coaching from a launch rather than the bank.

We store our shells and launch at St. Edward’s School Boathouse, labelled with the yellow arrow. The stretch of water we subsequently train on is between the green arrows, to the west of Port Meadow.

There are 2 main options to travel to St. Edward’s Boathouse from college:
  1. Cycling from college takes 12-15 minutes along the route indicated with red arrows. Bike racks are provided at St. Edward’s Boathouse, so bike parking is not an issue!
  2. Walking from college takes 45-50 minutes along the route indicated with orange arrows.

Detailed instructions are given below!

Cycling

  • Turn right out of the front entrance of college, along Woodstock Road.
  • Keep going along Woodstock Road, past the College Sports Ground and towards the roundabout with the ring road.
  • Avoid the roundabout by taking the turn before, called First Turn.
  • Head over the railway and take the second right onto Mere Road.
  • Follow Mere Road until a mini roundabout, then turn left onto Godstow Road.
  • Continue along Godstow Road, going over the railway bridge.
  • When you reach a mini roundabout, bear left to continue along Godstow Road.
  • Follow the road over one bridge until you reach the Trout Inn.
  • Here, there will be a left turn down a track that leads you to St. Edward’s School Boathouse

Walking

  • Head west out of the front entrance of college, along St Benard’s Road.
  • At the end of the road, continue straight along Walton Well Road.
  • You will cross the canal and railway until you reach the entrance to Port Meadow.
  • Turn right and follow the footpath north through Port Meadow.
  • A possible route is shown in orange, but head through Port Meadow to the car park at the north entrance.
  • Once you reach this car park, turn left along Godstow Road.
  • Follow the road over one bridge until you reach the Trout Inn.
  • Here, there will be a left turn down a track that leads you to St. Edward’s School Boathouse
