Overall Success in Summer VIIIs for SABC!
After a rain filled Hillary term put pay to Torpids 2024, SABC came back with a vengeance for Summer VIIIs. Ever the underdogs, with W1 being the highest women's boat that trains solely on the Isis, SABC put down the power when it mattered and crews did themselves proud.
M1 go +1
W1 go -3
W2 go +3
M1 Report- Guy Rudman (M1 Cox)
Let’s start with the M1, who went +1 overall, the best result the M1 has seen for years!
Bow to stroke: Nik Betz/Peter Le, Daniel Grant, Ben O’Donnell, Alek Kovalenko, Max Shulklapper, Riho Marten-Pallum, Kasper Sunnpedersen, Tom Lavis
C: Guy Rudman/Amy Jenkins
Coach: Jocasta Bird
Our M1 is composed of the bravest, silliest bunch of economics postgrads I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. With just FIVE WEEKS of solid water time, we were easily contending with solid crews from huge selection pools who had off-Isis training. Day 1 saw us bump both St Antony’s O1 and Keble M2 in the pouring rain, sending us solidly into Division 3.
A terrifyingly strong Wolfson crew managed to get the better of us on Thursday, Captain of Coxes Amy Jenkins bravely subbing in for cox Guy Rudman, after an equipment failure left the boys unsettled, but we bounced back on Friday to close in on them before they bumped Somerville ahead of them and we had to row over.
The highlight of our week, however, was not the bump, but the two BRUTAL row overs we were put through at the top of Division 4 by Balliol M2, on Friday and Saturday. Some tactical pushes, tight lines and great crab recoveries let us cross the line ahead of them both days, and the exhausted crews on the finish line were full of mutual respect for each other.
With almost all of our squad sticking around for next year, we are full of blades-flavoured optimism for Torpids!
W1 Report- Molly Wilson (W1 Rower)
Next up, W1!!! Our W1 went -3 this year, due in no small part to some phenomenal opposition. Despite this, we’ve got our heads held high and are looking forward to seeing some of this year’s insanely strong W2 members row for the W1 next summer.
Bow to stroke: Emily Paterson, Alex Andrew, Lotta Baalerud, Molly Wilson, Kate McLoughlin, Grace Glover, Helena Barker, Hazel Bott
Cox: Amy Jenkins
Our amazing subs: Hannah Swain, Nicole Dvorak and Joe Gellett
Coach: Grace Richards
Special shout out to our bank riders: Nathan Fenby and the random Worcester guy who nearly got us fined.
With Anne’s being quite a small rowing college, this gave novices the chance to row alongside blues in a boat that provided action to spectators every day.
Having been bumped by New College on day 1, the W1 held off St John’s until the top end of boat house island on day 2. This was in large part thanks to some stellar belief in the rowers from the coxing seat (there is nothing like hearing your cox tell you “I am not going to concede” to make you row harder). Day 3 saved us from spoons with an exhausting row over in a multiple boat sandwich. This left us hungry for a bump, however Day 4 was not to be and Lincoln caught us after a boat stopping crab of epic proportions.
As one of the novices in the boat, I have never made a boat go backwards with a cooler bunch of people. Be they Blues of awe-inspiring watts, senior college rowers with oodles of experience, or fellow novice Lotta erging with me at stupid o’clock in the morning, they were 100% worth wearing a unisuit for.
W2 Report- Nathan Fenby (W2 Coach)
Last but by no means least (in fact, probably most), the W2!
The SABC W2 went +3 in 2024, a fantastic result showcasing a year's worth of hard work in difficult circumstances. This builds on a brilliant set of results from earlier in the term.
The W2 bumped Exeter on day one, Worcester on day two, rowed over on day three and bumped Oriel on day four.
This year’s W2 is filled to the brim with kind, determined and fierce individuals (not to mention filled with watts) who this season have come together to form an unstoppable team. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with the whole novice women’s squad this year.
Many of this year’s W2 (and nov women) are moving on to greener pastures at the end of this term. We wish them all the best wherever the world may take them. Do stay in touch!
A massive thanks goes out to the skilled team of coxes that steered the SABC W2 with knife-like precision through the isis: Joe Gellett, Amy Jenkins and Elisabeth Edwards.
Keep buggering on!
